How we calculate it

These are the 30 products of the Basic Food Basket monitored by Honduras' Secretariat of Economic Development, in their official presentations.
At each store we pick the cheapest option per official presentation: a 1.75 kg bag of rice counts for what one pound of that bag costs.
Stores are ranked only by the products they all sell today. Adding up whatever each one sells wouldn't be fair: a store with no cabbage would look cheaper for that alone.
The change and the chart compare a single list of products across all dates and stores: the ones they all carried every day. If a store lacked a product on one day, it leaves the whole list, so a rise or a drop never comes from a change in what's being added up.
We compare the basket product, not an exact item: if another brand becomes the cheapest option, that's the price that counts that day.
Banana, orange, plantain and tortilla are counted per unit. When a store sells them by weight, we assume 150 g, 200 g, 250 g and 30 g per unit.
We use prices published online and read in the last 30 days. Picking is automatic and can be wrong, so every price links to the item: confirm it with the store before buying.
