Local fruit

Bananas, plantains, pineapple, papaya, watermelon, melon, mango, avocado, orange, tangerine, lime, guava, passion fruit and seasonal fruit (jocote, nance, mamón). They drop hard at harvest; the history shows when.

Imported fruit

Red and green apples, grapes, pears, kiwi, strawberries, blueberries, cherries and peaches. Here the supermarket almost always beats the market, and PriceSmart wins on big boxes.

Tips

• Compare per pound even when the store sells per unit: weigh it mentally.
• Imported Hass avocado and local avocado have very different prices; search the one you want.
• In Comayagua, Siguatepeque and La Esperanza highland fruit (strawberries, peaches) is cheaper in season.
